Welcome back to Work In Progmess, the only newsletter where leadership lessons come wrapped in satire and career advice occasionally sneaks in disguised as a lottery ticket.

This week, we could have written about billionaires, financial strategies, or the odds of winning Powerball. Instead, we found something better: a story about one person who decided that real wealth is not in the bank, but in the story you build.

Spoiler: he traded billions for a book. And not just any book.

Powerball Winner Rejects $900 Million Payout… Asks for 1 Copy of The Business of You Instead

“Money can’t teach you who you are,” he said. “But a good book can.”

Anywhere, USA — In an unprecedented twist in Powerball history, local man who just became a co–winner of the $1.8 Billion jackpot reportedly declined both the 30 year annuitized payout and the one time lump sum. Instead, at the press conference Monday, he politely requested… one hardcover copy of The Business of You.

“It was a tough decision,” he admitted, "but I realized that money can't buy clarity, purpose, or a story worth telling." The second winner, who accepted their share of $900 million, looked visibly stunned.

When asked why he’d make such an unconventional choice, our hero listed reasons only an obsessed Work In Progmess reader could:

  • “Loyalty isn’t earned by titles or net worth. It’s earned by showing up. The book reminds me of that."
  • “I’d rather build a life that fits me than buy a life that fits somebody else's template.”
  • “For a fraction of the payout, I can learn to tell my story instead of burying it under luxury purchases.”
  • “I’d rather be known for who I become, not what I spent.”

Crowds immediately gathered outside the bookstore, chanting: “One copy for all of us!”

Let’s be honest. Even if you could trade billions for wisdom, would you? Probably not. Most people would take the money, buy a boat, and then wonder why they still feel empty while Googling “why am I sad on a yacht.”

Which is exactly why one winner made the better choice: The Business of You.

Full disclosure: yes, we wrote the book. Yes, we are absolutely telling you to buy it. And no, you do not have to be a billionaire to afford it.

If it is good enough for a Powerball winner to pass up $900 million, it might be good enough for your Tuesday.
So skip the scratch-off ticket and grab a copy. The ROI is purpose, clarity, and at least one laugh at our expense.

📩Until Next Time…

Forward this to someone who thinks a bigger paycheck is the goal. Remind them: the real jackpot is knowing why you want it.

Your currency is your story. Invest wisely.
